My First MLS Experience: Witnessing a Canadian Derby at the Montreal Olympic Stadium
My first MLS experience: a thrilling Canadian derby in Montreal's Olympic Stadium.
The Major League Soccer (MLS) has steadily grown into a prominent force in the global football landscape, captivating audiences with its unique blend of athleticism, passionate rivalries, and a distinctly North American flavor. Amidst this burgeoning league, two Canadian clubs stand out, their histories intertwined with both triumph and adversity: Montreal Impact and Toronto FC. These cross-country rivals have not only captivated Canadian fans but have also played a pivotal role in elevating the MLS to new heights.
My first football game on the North American continent happened in November 2016, during a long-term business trip to Montreal, Canada. The opportunity of watching a Canadian Derby in the MLS Eastern Conference Final was too good to miss. The game was played on the Montreal Olympic Stadium, the same place where Nadia Comaneci won the first perfect 10 in gymnastic history at the Olympic Games in 1976.
Founded in 1992, the Montreal Impact have carved a unique path in North American football. While their MLS journey began in 2012, their roots run deep in the city's passionate soccer culture. From the early days at Claude-Robillard Stadium to the electric atmosphere of Stade Saputo, the Impact have fostered a dedicated following. Their distinctive blue, black, and white colors and the iconic fleur-de-lis emblem symbolize their connection to Montreal's identity. Despite a history marked by both triumphs and challenges, the Impact's unwavering spirit and commitment to their community have solidified their place as a beloved symbol of Montreal.
The Montreal Olympic Stadium, a colossal structure that dominates the city's skyline, stands as a testament to both architectural ambition and controversial legacy. Built for the 1976 Summer Olympics, its iconic inclined tower and sweeping roofline have become synonymous with Montreal's identity. Due to the importance of the game, the football team was allowed to play there against Toronto FC. Montreal Impact usually plays their home games at the Stade Saputo stadium, found in the vicinity of the Olympic Stadium. Stade Saputo is a vibrant hub of football energy. Its intimate atmosphere and passionate crowds create an intimidating cauldron for visiting teams, while its distinctive blue and black design proudly reflects the Impact's identity.
The game represented the first leg of the Eastern Conference Final and it was an exciting 3-2 win for the home team. Montreal Impact found themselves in the lead, scoring three goals in the first 52 minutes with the efforts Oyongo, Mancosu, and Oduro. Jozy Altidore pulled one back in the 68th minute and Toronto Captain Michael Bradley added a second, five minutes later to breathe life into TFC and their fans heading into the second leg of the 2016 Eastern Conference Final. At that time, on the bench of Montreal Impact was also no other than Didier Drogba, a Chelsea London legend. He entered the game in minute 71 and in the image below you can see the joy of his family, displaying with pride the Ivory Cost flag.

The return leg, played in Toronto, was a game of a similar level, with Toronto FC taking the game to extra time after a 3-2 win. They managed to score two more goals in extra time to qualify over their Montreal rivals.
Witnessing this historic match at the iconic Montreal Olympic Stadium was an unforgettable experience. It was a thrilling encounter between two passionate rivals, showcasing the growing excitement and quality of the MLS. The atmosphere was electric, and the game's intensity was palpable. It was a privilege to witness such a memorable event in a stadium steeped in history.
